Dr Vaughan grew up in the Bronx and majored in Biology and Psychology at NYU. While in college, he was a surfguard at Rockaway Beach and Coney Island, and he taught swimming and children’s gymnastics. After college, he worked as a high school science teacher, as a medic in the NYC Emergency Medical Service, and taught emergency medical techniques at the City University of New York.
Dr Vaughan enrolled in Columbia University’s post-baccalaureate premedical program then went on to complete medical school at Brown University on a military scholarship. While in medical school, he worked at the Rhode Island Hospital Emergency Department as an emergency technician and also conducted research involving behavior modification to improve health outcomes such as smoking cessation and weight loss. He went on to complete a Family Medicine internship at Maine-Dartmouth, and then completed his residency at UC Davis.
After residency, Dr Vaughan was called to active duty. He was stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas, at Fort Sill in Oklahoma and at Fort Polk at Louisiana. He joined the 116th Field Hospital and was deployed to camp Arifjan in Kuwait, where he was the Chief of Medicine and Medical Director of the outpatient clinic. Before completing his military service, he was briefly deployed to Forward Operating Base Dagger in Tikrit, Iraq.
Upon completing his military service, Dr Vaughan moved to San Francisco where he worked as a hospitalist at a number of hospitals including St Francis, CPMC Pacific, St Luke’s, Davies campuses. He then worked at Marin Health Medical Center from 2011 to 2025 before transitioning to Mills Peninsula Medical Center in March 2025.
Dr Vaughan enjoys being a hospitalist as it allows him to practice a broad scope of medicine. He sees his patients as whole human beings and embraces the challenges that inpatient medicine brings.
Outside of medicine, he was a former tri-athlete and enjoys surfing in the summer and skiing in the winter, but he spends most of his time with his wife and children.
